Home Remedy for Sunburns

Is there anything more painful or bothersome to your skin than a sunburn? You didn’t mean to get it, but the day was just so beautiful, you were having so much fun, that is until you noticed that your skin resembled a lobster.  Here you will find home remedies to combat the pain and itching that are sure to follow.
The first two tips may seem like the last thing you would use on a burn.  But they are tried and true methods that worked long before the days of conveniently located CVS and Walgreens pharmacies.  Witch hazel is an astringent used for many purposes.  One of the things it can treat effectively is a sunburn.  Put some on a cool wet washcloth and pat (never rub) it over your sunburn.  It provides soothing relief and can be repeated as often as necessary.

Take a vinegar bath.  The first time I was told to do this I thought my relative had lost her mind.  Then I remembered that she hailed from Florida and my Midwestern sunburn was nothing compared to her years of experience dealing with kids and burns.  Pour one cup of vinegar in a tub of cool bath water.  It will feel as though the vinegar is literally soaking up the burn.  You can also dip a wet washcloth in the vinegar and apply as you would the witch hazel.

If your eyelids are burnt head to your kitchen.  Cucumbers can provide soothing relief and reduce swelling.  Tea bags can also be used and will have the same results.

Another home remedy for sunburns is a baking soda paste.  Add a generous amount of baking soda to a bowl of water then apply it to your skin.  Let it dry.  Rinse well in cool water then follow with moisturizer.  If your moisturizer contains perfumes you may want to consider using baby oil instead, allowing it to soak into your dry skin to reduce itching.
